View Types of Carpet Finishes
Twist
Made from twisted cut fibres that lend themselves to most rooms that will take carpet in the house. They are less likely to show marks than other finishes and are hard-wearing.
Velvet or plush
Velvet carpet (often called plush) is a cut pile style with loosely twisted threads. The effect is very neat and smart, but they are not the softest carpets available.
Saxony
Saxony takes twist pile to the next level, with much longer pile for even more luxury. The main drawback is that they can show lines where they have been moved, trodden upon or vacuumed.
Berber
Berber is a harder-wearing version of loop pile, made by having tighter loops. However, softness is often achieved by using a thicker, plusher thread.
Cut and loop
As the name suggests, it’s a blend of loop pile and cut pile threads, giving a balance of softness, grip and durability. Sometimes the different types are used to create a pattern; other times they are distributed evenly all over the carpet.
Loop
Made from uncut loops of yarn that can be flat or textured. They tend to have a rugged look and hold their shape well. Loop may not be a good idea if you have pets though, as the loops can get caught in their claws.
Shag
The ultimate in softness must be the shag carpet. It has very long, fat threads going in all directions, so it’s like walking on balls of wool – very comfy, but can be tricky to keep clean.
Cut pile
With a cut pile carpet, the individual threads point upwards and are cut straight across, a bit like a short haircut. Because the threads are free to move and there’s some give in the carpet, they are soft underfoot. The downside is that they can start to wear out relatively quickly.

FSW sanded and sealed our ground floor wooden floors. Glyn was friendly and diligent and, following a couple of bits of rework (at no extra cost), we are very pleased with an excellent result. We would recommend FSW as a very good local company with very good people.Posted on Google![]()

Frequently Asked Questions
What types of carpet do you stock?
We stock a wide range of carpets to suit every taste and budget, including twist pile, loop pile, cut and loop, and saxony styles. We work with some of the finest British manufacturers including Axminster, Westex, Victoria, Crucial Trading, Hartley & Tissier, Fibre Flooring, and The Woven Edge, so there’s something for every home and every room.
How do I choose the right carpet for my room?
It really depends on how the room is used. For high-traffic areas like hallways and stairs, a dense twist pile is a great choice as it’s hard-wearing and resilient. For bedrooms, a softer saxony or deep pile carpet adds a feeling of luxury underfoot. Our team will always help you find the right carpet for your specific space, lifestyle, and budget when you visit our showroom.
Do you offer a free home survey?
Yes. Before we provide a final quote, one of our experienced team will visit your home to measure accurately and assess the space. This ensures we order exactly the right amount of carpet and identify anything that needs to be prepared before fitting. It’s completely free and there’s no obligation.
Can you create a bespoke or custom carpet?
Yes. We offer a custom carpet service that allows you to design a carpet tailored to your exact space, style, and specification. Choose your colour, material, and finish and we’ll handle the rest. It’s perfect for staircases, awkward spaces, or anywhere you want something truly unique. Get in touch to find out more.
What is the best carpet for stairs and hallways?
Stairs and hallways need a carpet that can handle heavy foot traffic day after day. We typically recommend a high-density twist pile in a mid-tone colour, paired with a good quality underlay. A wool or wool-blend carpet is an excellent choice for these areas as it’s naturally resilient and looks great for longer.
Do you supply and fit, or just supply?
We offer both. Our preferred service is supply and fit, as this ensures everything is installed to the highest standard by our experienced fitting team. However, if you already have your own fitter or prefer to purchase the carpet only, we’re happy to supply it directly. Just get in touch and we’ll discuss the options with you.
How long does carpet fitting take?
Most rooms can be fitted in a single day. Larger projects or properties with multiple rooms may take longer. We’ll always give you a clear timeframe when you book, and our team will work efficiently to minimise disruption to your home.
Do I need underlay with my carpet?
Yes, we always recommend fitting a quality underlay beneath your carpet. A good underlay adds comfort underfoot, improves insulation, reduces noise between floors, and significantly extends the life of your carpet. We stock a range of underlay options to suit different flooring types and budgets.
